Work History

Support Worker

IDEA Services, IHC
Whakatane
10.2013 - Current
  • Many of the people I support have learning disabilities compounded with challenging behavior's, as well as ongoing social issues
  • This includes people on the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • They all find it very difficult communicating and interacting with others, and this is where I come in
  • By showing them respect, letting them know that they are valued and giving them time to process what they would want to happen for themselves
  • Being a part of enabling them to lead more fulfilling lives is hugely rewarding
  • It takes a lot of time and patience, but it is definitely rewarding.

E Tu Delegate

E Tu Union
Whakatane
01.2016 - Current
  • represent E tū members in your workplace
  • recruit new members, activists, and leaders
  • engage with members and get them involved to build a better workplace
  • be actively involved in bargaining collective agreements and other union activities
  • keep yourself and your colleagues informed about current union matters
  • Handled challenging situations with ease.
  • Demonstrated respect, friendliness and willingness to help wherever needed.

Representative

Central Region Maori Advisory Group, IDEA Services
01.2015 - 01.2019
  • IHC) I represented Taupo, Rotorua, Whakatane, Opotiki as part of the Central Region Maori Advisory Group
  • Our goals and objectives are inherent in the “Idea Services Regional Bi-cultural Plans”
  • The aim of this group is to support the organization’s core values of empowerment, inclusion, support and responsiveness towards Maori with an intellectual disability.

Literacy & Numeracy Support Tutor

REAP
Whakatane
01.2012 - 01.2013
  • I mainly worked one on one with supporting students
  • I had to be flexible with my agenda as quite often ‘walk-ins’ would take priority over scheduled plans
  • For example, two kaumatua from Ruatoki wanting help to fill in a passport application and when they realized I could communicate with them in te reo, they felt more at ease.
  • Monitored status of students requiring special attention.
  • Provided planned objectives and instruction for struggling adult readers.

Learner Licence Tutor

REAP
01.2009 - 01.2012
  • Eastbay REAP, Whakatane
  • Supported Learner Licence Preparation workshops in numerous parts of the Eastern Bay mainly in a voluntary capacity
  • Dealing with some rangatahi who were never encouraged to better themselves could be quite challenging at times, but I found that when we began and ended each workshop with a karakia, things tended to go more smoothly
  • With our rangatahi, we need to look at the person, not the behaviour in order to get the best that we can from and for them.

Election Officer

01.2011
  • Based at Te Kura O Te Teko, I was responsible for the Maori component of the Election where people could speak to me in te reo Maori regarding any issues they had with filling out their ballot.

Collector Waiariki

Census NZ
Whakatane
01.2011 - 01.2011
  • Worked within the boundaries of Te Teko, Te Mahoe, Waiohau, Galatea and eastern outskirts of Murupara to deliver census packs to households
  • Many whanau were living in isolated areas, sometimes homes could only be accessed by foot
  • Understanding maps was necessary as the whole area had to be divided up to ensure that no household was overlooked
  • Many families within my allocated area had English as their second language
  • Because of this, I was entrusted with both language packs.

Trustee

01.2010
  • My role involved ensuring that the services the hauora offered were aimed at positive outcomes for the community, iwi, hapu and whanau
