I have dedicated the past 43 years to helping other people as a nurse in various forms and contexts and as a paramedic for St John Ambulance NZ, both in paid and voluntary roles. In doing so I have gained immense personal satisfaction throughout my life knowing that I have contributed to the community and to the health and wellbeing of the people I have looked after as well as the health care workers I have been privileged to work alongside.
As a nursing team member I enjoy and value teamwork and how that brings great value to the patients we care for.
As a team leader I have become skilled at managing groups of staff from all walks of life and of a wide variety of ages and cultures. I enjoy the challenges and rewards that diversity brings to the workplace.
I have worked mostly in high acuity settings that are busy and require planning as well as fast and effective leadership and a broad situational overview. My naturally calm and thoughtful nature has often been a valued asset in this environment.
I love to teach others and and have had many opportunities to educate and mentor my nursing and ambulance colleagues.
After qualifying as a registered psychiatric nurse in Exeter, Devon, England, I worked in child and adolescent psychiatry and then adult acute psychiatry in England and then emigrated to New Zealand where I worked in Adult acute psychiatry at Gisborne Hospital.
Prior to my nursing career I completed a double apprenticeship in shipbuilding and steel construction and pipefitting/plumbing.
All of the above in moderation.
