My situation is solo Dad with a mortgage. I am a self employed, running my own mainly arb business. I do from hedge trimming, to hiring 13ton diggers and popping heads out of big tree old man pines.
I also do farm digger work, drainage, driveways etc.
My clients understand that I can only work from 8:30 till 3pm, it works well and I have good regular work and recommended new customers as well.
Was hired as truck driver/groundy. Enjoyed training as bucket operator. Was close comp qualified and foreman after 12 months. Moved into land clearing, running 8t digger and 16" chipper. Learnt to climb/fell off some of the best in that job as well.
I'm from a machinery back ground so looked after servicing, maintenance and organising fixing broken stuff.
Shearing was my main job for the 21 years. All over NZ and overseas. I did fencing, docking, digger work and truck driving in-between shearing seasons.
While shearing I did consistent numbers in the sheds, as well as some good personal bests. Most of the time i was foreman/ganger. I met a lot of great people and learned about working/living with all sorts of people in a tough work environment. I also enjoyed meeting new people and helping them try get people thru the couple of years of pain that's not optional for success. Some made it, some didn't.
I did competitive shearing and collected few ribbons in lower grades. 39th in open field of about 120 at Golden Shears was my best result.
My No1 focus is raising my daughters and securing a regular income.
