Recent Projects

Investigation of laser powered drone integration techniques:

  • My Part IV project, sponsored by Aquila Earth, investigated the feasibility of using high-power laser beams to power a DJI drone via a dedicated solar panel. The project included implementing MPPT and buck/boost converter methods to increase the drone's flight time and reduce its weight.

Power System ELECTENG731(B+):

  • North Island transmission grid backbone network modelling:

Utilized Transpower's "Annual Planning Report" to calculate bus, generator, and branch data. Performed power flow and optimal power analysis using MATPOWER in MATLAB.

  • Voltage and Frequency Stability Analysis:

Built a SIMULINK model of a three-bus 500-KV system to analyze various instability events. Wrote a technical report detailing observations and potential solutions.

Wireless powered RC Car ELECTENG734(A):

  • Designed an energy harvesting board and a buck board to replace the battery in an RC car. The project involved simulation, prototyping, and racing on track day, ranked 4th out of 12.

Smart baby weight scale ELECTENG770(A+):

  • Collaborated with embedded and software engineering students to develop a smart baby weight scale according to client specifications, focusing on system design. Emphasized teamwork through weekly meetings and using a Gantt chart to track workflow. Contributed to all hardware aspects, including simulation, PCB design, and final implementation.

120KW Solar String Inverter:

  • Tested an inverter under different load cases and collected data for technical report writing. Designed a flyback converter used in the inverter to produce the power supply for the MCU and fans.

DIALux Lighting Design(Building Services):

  • Conducted a lighting analysis on Legrand's 1600m² building. Proposed a new design to enhance lighting uniformity while adhering to AS/NZS 1680 standards. Designed emergency lighting per the New Zealand Building Code. Prepared a formal report with an estimated payback time.

Drone production:

  • Using a soldering iron and configuration software, built drones for commercial use. This hobby, which began in 2016, has become a part-time job, taking footage for clients at events or of specific objects.
