Summary

Strategic Financial Management: As CFO of HUD I’m responsible for the financial stewardship of approximately $5 billion per annum. There is significant complexity within this spend requiring sound financial judgement to enable stronger non-financial outcomes. Drove successive and successful Budget submissions, including the 2022 Pilot Justice Cluster process. Led the Corrections response to the 2021/22 Treasury Spending Review. Acted as CFO for Corrections for over 11 months on two separate occasions which included periods of critical financial deliverables. Successfully delivered a strategically focused Long Term Investment Plan at Corrections which was highly recommended by central agencies. Leading improvements to the internal budgeting approach at the HUD. Improved financial sustainability for Fairfax NZ by implementing a robust financial framework which included a new credit policy to improve collection results and overall cashflow position for Fairfax NZ. Drove a digitally led financial strategy through system changes resulting in reduced ongoing effort to process transactions. One example of this was the implementation of BCI for contributor invoicing at Fairfax resulting in higher supplier engagement and significantly reduced AP effort. People leadership and development: Leader of large teams (Fairfax NZ and New Zealand Post) covering diverse responsibilities, including Finance, Project Management and Risk. At NZ Post this leadership included the Business Improvement Team and PMO. Implementation of a performance management framework for the Finance team at Fairfax NZ (50 plus employees). Motivation and leading teams – engagement and empowering them to achieve success. Staff performance reviews, KPI and objective setting, development planning, and coaching. Providing financial leadership to the business through strong advice and effective training. Interpersonal, communication and relationship management skills: Effective at leading conversations with senior leadership teams. Willingness to learn and develop through effective listening. Motivated to achieving and delivering success. Reliable and very strong work ethics with very high integrity standards. Able to effectively communicate with all staff at all levels. Change management: Successful delivery of Oracle at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. New Zealand lead for the implementation of SAP AR (consolidated over 20 separate debtors ledgers (300,000+ customers) into one over a period of two years), GL, Purchasing and Fixed Assets into Fairfax New Zealand. This change included the centralisation of the AR functions into three hubs. Significant improvement in critical KPI’s through business / stakeholder engagement, focus on key business rules and effective communication, including conflict resolution. Successfully led the implementation of an expense management system for over 900 users across NZ in a very short timeframe (3 months). This implementation included changing card provider, new Policy, development of training material and a effective communication plan. Continual focus on process improvement leading to year on year cost savings and head count reduction over the five years at Fairfax NZ. Six Sigma trained (Green Belt level) and sponsor of Six Sigma projects. Technical and accounting Overall financial accounting, tax and treasury responsibilities for Fairfax New Zealand including ongoing improvement of complex masthead valuation models and other areas of technical judgment. Business partner for the largest business group within NZ Post (Postal Services Group). Exposure to Tax Management (largely indirect taxes) and Treasury Management at Fairfax NZ. Experience at Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Corrections, NZ Post and Fairfax NZ has provided me with an insight into a wide range of routine and complex technical and operational issues. ERP Implementations – PeopleSoft, Oracle and SAP. Risk management: Development and review of financial processes to reduce financial exposure. Implementation of processes to minimise our exposure to errors. Owner of the Fairfax NZ insurance programme – reduced cost without impacting risk profile. Strategic risk profiling at NZ Post.
