SUMMARY
I am currently working as the Planning Producer at Te Karere. In my role as the Planning Producer for Te Karere I am the first point of contact for information coming into the show via our networks and reporters. It is my responsibility to filter this information and then pass it forward in the right direction to the benefit of the show.
Relationships are integral in my role as planner and maintaining those relationships not only in our team but throughout the TVNZ newsroom and upper levels are vital to the success of our team. I am the first contact for Te Karere it is essential that I know what is News and what isn't, I must also be aware that what I personally do not find newsworthy others may do therefore it is vital that I discuss all potential stories with my team at Te Karere or as quite often is the case those in the wider newsroom.
1NEWS Planning Producer Kim Baker-Wilson is a key contact in my current role. Pulling together relevant information from sources and the newsroom are key parts of my job, partaking in various hui / meetings in the newsroom every day and being the eyes and ears for Maori news.
I have made it my intention from my very first day at TVNZ to break down barriers within the office between Te Karere and the wider newsroom. I will and have fought for our unique Maori voice to be heard and include. At times I have had to push the boundaries to get things across the line or to be heard and I am proud of the achievements that have been made. I am fiercely loyal to my show and I will go above and beyond to get what is needed.
The role of Planning Producer has over the year taken on a life of it's own and encompasses much more than chairing morning and afternoon meetings for Te Karere, assigning reporters stories and liaising with talent. The job requirements are now wide including regular pick ups, writing VO's, editing and helping reporters to prepare and write scripts. I am currently in the process of learning aspects of lining up and I am often called on to cut VO's and help on the line.
Through my role at Te Karere I have learnt much about my own abilities and time management and I know I can do any job I put my mind too.
