Summary

Born and raise here in Taupō keeps the connection running strong. My kura up ringing has enriched and deepened my connection with our whenua here in Ngāti Tūwharetoa. My professional life has develop ed and come from the fruits our whenua has provided for us whether that be in the forest, production of milk, kaitiakitanga or sharing and feeding our tamariki mokopuna with mātauranga treasures of our whenua.

Here in Te Hikuwai my maternal tīpuna named Maaka ties me here tō Ngāti Rauhoto and Te Rangiita. My kuia Makere Goldsmith nee Rutene has links out Mōkai tō Waihāhā. On my paternal side wē have strong ties in Te Mataapuna. My tīpuna on this side of the lake is named Wereta Rangitakatu Who hails from Ngāti Rongomai and Ngāti Hikairo

Cultural Monitor Brief- Geofuture Projects

The intent of a Cultural Monitor (CM) is tō be the hapū eyes and ears on development sites during earth works associated with Contact Energy project. Specifically, the discovery of archaeological remains and/or evidence of significant cultural sites/Tāonga.

Provide Cultural Training

Project Staff/Contractors will receive training specifically regarding Māori cultural values, Tūwharetoa /Hapū history and sites of significance within the Wairakei geothermal system.

Core Task of Cultural Monitor

To be onsite during all active excavations up tō one meter in depth.

Alternative Mahi/Duties

During any downtime I have been fortunate enough tō work alongside expert in the environmental team here at Contact and learnt alot around restoration project specifically in and around the geothermal space.

Reporting Back to Hapū

In the case of discovery of archaeological remains or evidence of a site of cultural significance i.e kōiwi, tangata, or wāhi tapu, the reporting protocol is prescribed in Contact Energy's Accidents Discovery Protocol.

Working within my own Community outdoors was very refreshing learning new skills i.e Tree climbing, Using climbing gear, Operating Cherry Pickers and general knowledge about pants and trees only adds to ones basket of knowledge. Due to covid distruptions i was for ed tō look for a more secure line of work

I worked alongside our tamariki learning within a enriched Māori focused kaupapa implemented by our Tuwharetoa tānga. My tīpuna are from here, my up ringing under the cloak of TKKM o Whakarewa i te reo ki Tūwharetoa empowered me as my Tuwharetoatanga was being imprinted through Te Reo Māori me ōna Tikanga. What a priviledge it was to be a raukura sharing and feeding the next generation.
